Kine Per week told you “Brand new robust ‘crooks fall out’ try peopled with a colourful variety from crucial and you will arresting characters, and these, skilfully manipulated by the blogger and you will manager, allow the flick so you’re able to tread liquids effectively. It is only towards the end this actually starts to fall apart, nevertheless the smack-right up finale rescues they from the ‘red’. Ingeniously staged and you will intelligently dialogued, it has no great challenge inside the living off their extremely unappealing identity.” [ 8 ]
Monthly Flick Bulletin told you “The movie movements in the an instant rate, the fresh new talk is smooth and you may characterisations essentially energetic. Knob Powell and you may Evelyn Keyes head new throw expertly, just like the detective try used significant aplomb because of the that individual identification, Lee J. Cobb.” [ 9 ]
Richard Brody regarding The brand new Yorker detailed “It terse and you may taut flick noir try considering the latest personal and you will professional conflicts of identity character, the criminal genius (played by the Penis Powell) at the rear of an elegant unlawful gambling enterprise. The film’s publisher and you will movie director, Robert Rossen, creates a good multidimensional chess game, for mortal limits, anywhere between Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), his boss’s wife (Ellen Drew), a good cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you can a beneficial scuffling celebrity (Evelyn Keyes) whose brother (Nina Foch) worked within gambling establishment and you may dated a good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The brand new caustically epigrammatic program, the brand new cast’s suavely regulated gestures from like and you can danger, and Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and fashionably cocky photographs (as well as their political conscience) get this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle a low profile vintage of one’s style.” [ ten ]

Pic have actions and you may suspense, and you will specific short joins away from laughs to provide style. Expert activities from the Cock Powell, due to the fact a playing home overseer, and you will Lee J. Cobb, as the an authorities inspector, including up the rating . Even though the area observe a familiar trend, brand new characterizations try new as well as the activities good enough to overbalance. Dialogue was terse and you will topical, preventing the sentimental, phoney reach. Strange cam bases appear now and then to heighten attention and you may temporarily stop the interest. Solid teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing as director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, completely new author and you may associate music producer, along with supports making it a delicate development.” [ 11 ]

Its generally a matter of enjoying Mr. Powell undergo their paces stylishly whenever you are a huge cast regarding stars and stars offer your typical service. Evelyn Keyes takes on the nice absolutely nothing lady who brings forth brand new best in him and Ellen Drew ‘s the easy and you will slinky vixen which gets your towards the jams. Thomas Gomez was greasy due to the fact villain and you will Lee J. Cobb do a unique able tour because the a weary cops inspector whom in the long run closes the fact. Significant amounts of taking and you will smoking is completed by all concerned.” [ 12 ]
